March 10th, 2013–
Today we all spring forward. Many woke to a cell phone with a shortage of time or wall clocks that would be playing tricks on the mind until corrected. Well with this biannual tradition of setting out clocks to the new “correct” time, there are helpful suggestions to keeping your family and home safe year round.
Putting a new battery into your smoke detectors at this time, with the date written on the battery, not only will keep you alert at your most vulnerable times, but it is law to have one in every bedroom weather there are kids, guests, or roommates sleep. Don’t be held responsible as a home owner or renter if a fire were to occur by something as simple as an unattended candle or hair straightener.
Take this time to build or check your emergency kits. Over the past six months you may have used items from them or some may have gone bad or are close to expiration. Check this list for ideas and make sure everyone in your group/family knows where to go and what to do in the event of a natural or man made disaster.
With these and other simple ideas one can secure their household and make sure that everyone is safe. This peace of mind can be seen as the reward for giving up that precious hour of sleeping in on a Sunday.
